What Is VETASSESS?

Australia's Largest General Assessing Body

VETASSESS (Vocational Education and Training Assessment Services) is authorised by the Australian Government to assess over 200 general professional and trade occupations. It covers roles across management, business, arts, science, social services, hospitality, and technical fields — everything that does not fall under engineering, IT, nursing, or accounting.

What VETASSESS Evaluates

A VETASSESS assessment examines four key factors: the level of your qualification, the relevance of your qualification to the nominated occupation, the skill level of your work experience, and whether your employment duties align with the ANZSCO tasks for your occupation. A positive outcome is required for skilled visas 189, 190, 491, and 485 (Graduate Work).

Who Needs a VETASSESS Assessment?

Managers & Business Professionals

Management Consultants, Marketing Specialists, Human Resource Advisers, Quality Assurance Managers, Office Managers, Program/Project Administrators, and Contract Administrators all require a VETASSESS assessment.

Technical & Environmental Roles

Environmental Consultants, Technical Sales Representatives, Service Managers, and other specialist technical occupations that sit outside the engineering or ICT bodies are assessed by VETASSESS.

Hospitality, Tourism & Real Estate

Tourism and Hospitality Supervisors, Real Estate Representatives, Retail Supervisors, Hospitality Supervisors, Contact Centre Managers, and Property Managers are among the service-industry occupations on the VETASSESS list.

Health, Community & Other Professionals

A wide range of health workers, social service workers, arts professionals, and other roles not covered by AHPRA, ANMAC, or engineering bodies are assessed by VETASSESS — making it the most diverse assessing authority in Australia.

Two Assessment Streams

Professional Stream (Groups A–F)

The Professional Stream covers general professional occupations and divides them into six groups (A–F) based on the required qualification level — from Bachelor degree (Group A) down to Certificate IV / Diploma (Group E–F). Each group has specific experience timeframes and relevance rules. Most management, business, and technical occupations fall into this stream.

Trade Stream

The Trade Stream is for skilled trade occupations such as hairdressers, beauty therapists, and other vocational trades not assessed by TRA. Applicants are assessed against Australian trade standards, and recognition of overseas qualifications and practical experience are key considerations.

Eligibility Requirements – Professional Stream

Qualification

Your qualification must be comparable to the required AQF level for your occupation group. If your degree is not closely related to your nominated ANZSCO occupation, additional work experience may be required to compensate. VETASSESS assesses both the level and relevance of overseas qualifications.

Work Experience

VETASSESS typically requires 1–3 years of post-qualification skilled employment depending on your group. Experience must be paid, relevant to the nominated occupation, performed at the correct skill level, and completed within the past 5–10 years. Duties must align with the ANZSCO task descriptions for your occupation.

English Language

While VETASSESS itself does not set a minimum English score, skilled visa subclasses have their own English requirements (Competent, Proficient, or Superior English). Your IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL ER results will be assessed at the visa stage. Ensure you are aware of the applicable threshold for your target visa.

Occupation Groups at a Glance

Group A – Bachelor level minimum (e.g., Management Consultant, Marketing Specialist). Group B – Bachelor + relevant experience (e.g., Office Manager, QA Manager). Group C/D – Diploma level (e.g., Technical Sales, Hospitality Supervisors). Group E/F – Certificate IV/Diploma (e.g., Contact Centre Manager, Retail Supervisor).

VETASSESS Application Process – Step by Step

1

Select the Right ANZSCO Occupation

Choosing the correct ANZSCO code is critical. The wrong selection can lead to immediate rejection, significant delays, or an inability to receive visa invitations through SkillSelect.

2

Understand Your Occupation Group

Each group (A–F) has different minimum qualification levels, experience requirements, and relevance rules. Knowing your group determines exactly what documents and evidence you need to submit.

3

Gather Documentation

Collect qualification documents, employment reference letters, payslips, bank statements, tax evidence, employment contracts, and detailed position descriptions — correctly formatted to VETASSESS standards.

4

Prepare Reference Letters

Employment reference letters must be on company letterhead, signed by authorised management, include exact duties matching ANZSCO tasks, and state work hours, salary, and employment dates clearly.

5

Lodge the Application

Create your VETASSESS online account, upload documents correctly, complete all application forms accurately, and submit. Standard processing takes approximately 10–12 weeks; priority processing is 5–10 business days.

6

Respond to RFI & Receive Outcome

If VETASSESS issues a Request for Further Information (RFI), respond promptly with appropriate supporting evidence. A positive outcome confirms qualification equivalency, skill level, and skilled employment years recognised for visa purposes.

Documents Checklist

  • Passport and photograph (identity documents)
  • Name-change evidence (if applicable)
  • Degree or diploma certificate and academic transcripts
  • Detailed course syllabus (if requested by VETASSESS)
  • Employer reference letters (on letterhead, detailed duties, signed by management)
  • Detailed position descriptions matching ANZSCO tasks
  • Payslips (recommended 6–12 months per employer)
  • Bank statements showing salary deposits
  • Tax returns / Form 16 / PF statements
  • Employment contracts and organisational charts
  • CV / Resume and professional licences (if applicable)
  • Statutory declarations (only when permitted and supported by strong corroborating evidence)

Common Reasons for a Negative Outcome

Wrong ANZSCO Code Selected

Nominating an occupation that does not match your qualifications or actual job duties leads to immediate rejection. The right code selection is the single most important decision in the process.

Generic or Vague Duty Descriptions

Reference letters with high-level or copy-pasted duty lists are a leading cause of refusal. VETASSESS requires specific, detailed descriptions that clearly match the ANZSCO task list for your occupation.

Insufficient Salary Evidence

Relying solely on reference letters without supporting payslips, bank statements, or tax documents weakens your application significantly. Strong corroborating salary evidence is essential.

Qualification Not Related to Occupation

If your degree is in an unrelated field, VETASSESS may find it does not meet the relevance requirement for your nominated group, resulting in a negative outcome unless substantial compensatory experience is provided.

Overstated or Exaggerated Responsibilities

Claiming duties beyond your actual role is easily identified during assessment. Overstating responsibilities damages credibility and can result in a negative finding across your entire employment history.

Missing or Poorly Formatted Documents

Incomplete submissions, incorrect document formats, or failure to respond adequately to an RFI frequently result in delays or outright negative outcomes. Thorough preparation is non-negotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard VETASSESS processing takes approximately 10–12 weeks from the date of a complete application. A priority processing option is available for an additional fee, reducing the timeframe to 5–10 business days. Processing times can vary depending on the complexity of the case and VETASSESS workload at the time of lodgement.

A positive VETASSESS skills assessment is generally valid for 3 years from the date of the outcome letter. It is important to lodge your visa application or submit your Expression of Interest (EOI) before the assessment expires. If your assessment has expired, you may need to apply for a re-assessment or a new assessment.

A VETASSESS skills assessment is required for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190), Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491), the Graduate Work stream of the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), and in some cases for employer-sponsored pathways such as the subclass 186 TRT stream and subclass 494. Our consultants can advise which assessment type you need based on your target visa.
