APS Assessment Criteria
APS assesses whether your overseas psychology qualifications are equivalent to at least a six-year sequence of psychology education and training in Australia. This typically includes:
Undergraduate psychology degree
Accredited honours program
Postgraduate coursework, supervised practice, or higher degree
Key Requirements
Psychology Qualification Content
- Scientific study of human behaviour
- Psychological assessment methods
- Research methods and statistics
- Ethics and professional conduct
- Developmental, social, and abnormal psychology
- Applied psychological practice
Fourth Year / Postgraduate Requirement
APS requires evidence of advanced psychology training equivalent to an honours year or accredited postgraduate coursework. A 3-year degree alone does not meet requirements.
Practicum Evidence (If Applicable)
- Supervised practice hours and clinical hours
- Assessment & intervention experience records
- Placement documentation and supervision records
Assessment Process – Step by Step
Determine Qualification Equivalency
APS evaluates whether your psychology qualifications meet Australian training standards for length, content, and competencies.
Prepare Academic Documents
Gather transcripts, degree certificates, course outlines, and thesis/research project evidence structured for APS criteria comparison.
Prepare Practicum Evidence
If your program included supervised practice, prepare placement documentation that clearly demonstrates psychological competencies.
Lodge Application with APS
Complete the APS online application portal and upload all required academic documentation for assessment.
APS Assessment & Verification
APS reviews the level and length of study, psychology-specific content, research components, and applied training equivalency.
Receive Outcome Letter
A positive outcome confirms your qualifications meet Australian equivalence standards and you can claim the Psychologist occupation for skilled migration.
Documents Checklist
- Passport and photograph
- Degree certificates (Bachelor, Honours, Masters, or Doctoral)
- Academic transcripts for all psychology qualifications
- Detailed course descriptions or subject syllabi
- Evidence of research thesis or major project
- Practicum/placement documentation (if applicable)
- Name change documents (if applicable)
- Employer reference letters and payslips (optional, if submitting employment history)
Common Reasons for Refusal
Qualification Below 4th-Year Standard
Your qualification must be equivalent to at least a 4-year Australian psychology program including an honours year or postgraduate equivalent.
3-Year Degree Without Postgraduate Study
A three-year undergraduate psychology degree alone does not meet APS requirements without additional postgraduate training.
Insufficient Psychology-Specific Subjects
Must include core areas: research methods, psychological assessment, developmental, abnormal psychology, and applied practice.
Incomplete Academic Documents
Full transcripts, course descriptions, and evidence of all qualifications are essential. Missing documents prevent equivalency evaluation.
Research Component Insufficient
Honours or postgraduate programs must include a substantial research thesis demonstrating research competency in psychology.
Practicum Not by Qualified Supervisor
If practicum is included, it must have been supervised by qualified psychologists and properly documented with placement records.
