What Is the Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482)?

Employer Sponsored

Allows approved Australian employers to sponsor overseas workers for genuine skilled roles they cannot fill locally. Replaces and modernises the previous TSS program.

3 Streams

Three distinct streams — Specialist Skills, Core Skills, and Essential Skills — each with their own occupation lists, salary thresholds, and eligibility frameworks under the CSOL.

Path to PR via Subclass 186

482 holders may transition to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) or via the regional 494 → 191 PR pathway.

Work & Live Anywhere

Work and live in Australia for the duration of the visa. Partners and dependent children can be included as secondary applicants with the same work and study rights.

The Three Streams

Specialist Skills Stream

Open to any occupation. Salary must meet or exceed the Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT, currently ≥$135,000). Targets highly skilled, highly paid professionals at ANZSCO Skill Level 1–3.

Core Skills Stream

For occupations listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). Salary must meet the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT). Up to 4 years validity with pathway to PR.

Essential Skills Stream

Targets lower-salary occupations experiencing genuine skill shortages, particularly in sectors such as care work, agriculture, and hospitality. Terms set via labour agreements.

Key Requirements

Sponsoring Employer

Must be an approved Standard Business Sponsor. Must nominate a genuine full-time skilled position, conduct labour market testing, and meet salary obligations.

Nominated Occupation

Occupation must appear on the CSOL (Core Skills stream) or meet the income threshold (Specialist Skills stream). Correct ANZSCO classification is critical.

Work Experience (2 Years)

Applicants must demonstrate at least 1–2 years of relevant full-time work experience in the nominated occupation within the last 5 years (stream dependent).

English Proficiency

Valid English language ability must be demonstrated via an approved test (IELTS, PTE, TOEFL etc.) unless an exemption applies under the legislative instrument.

Health & Character

All applicants and included family members must meet health examination requirements and provide police clearances from countries of residence.

Skills Assessment (Stream Dependent)

A formal skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority is required for certain occupations or nationalities as specified under current legislative requirements.
