What Is the Skilled Migration Program?
Points-Tested System
Applicants are ranked based on points earned from age, skilled employment, qualifications, English proficiency, state nomination, Australian study, and partner skills.
Permanent Residency
Subclass 189 and 190 grant immediate permanent residency. Subclass 491 is a provisional visa with a clear PR pathway via Subclass 191 after meeting income and residency requirements.
Skills Assessment Required
A positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority is a mandatory prerequisite before submitting an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.
Occupation Lists
Your occupation must appear on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), or Regional Occupation List (ROL) to be eligible.
Key Visa Types
Subclass 189 – Independent
A permanent visa for skilled individuals without state nomination or employer sponsorship. Live and work anywhere in Australia with no state obligations. Highly competitive occupations receive priority invitations.
Subclass 190 – State Nominated
A permanent visa for applicants nominated by a state or territory government. Nomination adds 5 points and is a strong option for applicants who need extra points. State-specific requirements apply.
Subclass 491 – Regional
A 5-year provisional visa requiring state nomination or eligible family sponsorship. Adds 15 points, is designed for regional Australia, and provides a pathway to PR through Subclass 191 after 3 years.
Eligibility Requirements
Age (18–45)
Applicants must be between 18 and 45 years of age at the time of invitation. Maximum points are awarded to applicants aged 25–32.
Skills Assessment (Positive)
A positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority must be obtained before lodging an Expression of Interest via SkillSelect.
English (Competent+)
Competent English is the minimum requirement. Higher English scores (Proficient or Superior) earn additional points toward the 65-point threshold.
Points (65 Minimum)
A minimum of 65 points is required to lodge an EOI. Competitive occupations regularly receive invitations at significantly higher points scores.
Occupation on List
Your nominated occupation must appear on the MLTSSL, STSOL, or ROL, depending on the visa subclass you are applying for.
Health & Character
All applicants and included family members must meet Australian health and character requirements, including medical examinations and police clearances.

The minimum threshold to lodge an EOI is 65 points. However, competitive occupations regularly receive invitations at 80–90+ points, depending on the round. A higher points score significantly improves your chances of receiving an invitation.
There is no fixed timeline for receiving an invitation. Invitations are issued in rounds, and wait times can range from a few weeks to several years depending on your occupation, points score, and the number of available places. EOIs remain active for 2 years.
Yes. You can include your married or de facto partner and dependent children in your visa application. Family members must meet health and character requirements. A skilled partner may also contribute additional points to your overall score.
