What Is the Subclass 407 Training Visa?

Occupational Training

Enables individuals to undertake structured occupational training or professional development with an approved sponsor, including regulated professions requiring licensing or registration.

Up to 2 Years

Generally valid for up to 2 years depending on the approved training plan and sponsor agreement — work rights are limited strictly to the approved training activity.

Sponsored

Requires sponsorship by an approved Temporary Activities sponsor who must hold a valid sponsor licence and provide a comprehensive Training Plan (e.g. Form 1402 or equivalent).

Workplace-Based

Designed for supervised, workplace-based training placements — covering fields such as healthcare, technical trades, research, and corporate upskilling programs.

Who Is It For?

Overseas Nationals Seeking Training

Overseas-trained professionals who require supervised Australian work experience or structured training in order to meet licensing or registration requirements for their occupation.

Recent Graduates

Students and recent graduates needing workplace-based training as part of their curriculum or as a requirement before entering their chosen profession in Australia.

Professionals Upgrading Skills

Professionals undergoing short-term upskilling, regulatory compliance training, or corporate training placements arranged by an Australian sponsor organisation.

Government-Sponsored Trainees

Individuals participating in training programs endorsed or arranged by Australian or overseas government bodies as part of capacity-building or diplomatic initiatives.

Requirements

Sponsor Requirements

Must hold an approved Temporary Activities sponsor licence and provide a comprehensive Training Plan detailing training content, duration, supervision arrangements, and relevance to the applicant's career.

Age & English

Applicants must be 18 years or older and demonstrate functional English. Where the occupation is regulated, higher English or credential standards may apply.

Genuine Training Activity

The training activity must be genuine, structured, relevant to the applicant's career or regulatory needs, and clearly temporary in nature — not a substitute for regular employment.

Health & Character

All applicants and included family members must meet standard Australian immigration health and character requirements before the visa can be granted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — spouses/partners and dependent children may be included as secondary applicants, subject to the standard health and character requirements.

The 407 is strictly temporary and has no direct pathway to permanent residency. Conversion would require meeting eligibility for a separate visa category such as employer-sponsored, skilled, or another appropriate stream.

Functional English is mandatory. Where the occupation or profession is regulated, specific English proficiency levels or credential standards may apply beyond the minimum requirement.
