What Is a TRA Skills Assessment?
What It Assesses
Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) evaluates whether your trade qualifications, skills, and employment experience meet Australian industry standards. TRA assesses both licensed and non-licensed trade occupations across a broad range of industries.
Who Needs It
Tradespeople — including Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Welders, Automotive Mechanics, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Technicians, Chefs, and many other skilled trades — require a TRA assessment to apply for Australian skilled migration visas.
Relevant Visas
A positive TRA assessment is required for skilled trade visas including Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent), 190 (Skilled Nominated), 491 (Skilled Work Regional), 482 (TSS), 494 (Employer Sponsored Regional), and in some cases 485 Graduate Work stream.
Processing Time
TRA processing times vary by pathway. Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) applications typically take 8–12 weeks. Job Ready Program (JRP) stages span longer as they involve on-the-job assessment periods. OSAP technical interviews add further time depending on RTO availability.
Assessment Pathways
Skills Assessment Application (Gather Evidence)
The first stage for most TRA applicants — gathering and submitting trade qualifications, apprenticeship records, and employment evidence to demonstrate that your background meets Australian trade standards. This stage determines your pathway eligibility.
Trade Assessment (Practical / Interview)
Certain licensed trades — such as Electricians and Plumbers — require a practical skills demonstration and/or technical interview conducted by a TRA-approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Applicants must demonstrate hands-on competency and answer technical questions.
Offshore Assessment Option
The Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) pathway is designed for applicants located outside Australia or those not eligible for the Job Ready Program. TRA reviews trade qualifications, industry experience, and evidence of performing trade tasks without requiring physical presence in Australia.
Job Ready Program (JRP) — Australian Graduates
Designed for international students who completed an Australian trade qualification. The JRP runs through four stages: Provisional Skills Assessment, Job Ready Employment (12 months minimum), Job Ready Workplace Assessment, and Job Ready Final Assessment — leading to skilled migration eligibility.

The Job Ready Program (JRP) is for international students who completed a trade qualification in Australia and wish to migrate. If you are offshore, or completed your training outside Australia, the Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) is the applicable pathway. Your trade type and location are the key factors.
