Migration Skills Assessment for Accounting, Finance and Business Professionals in Australia

For accounting and finance professionals seeking to migrate to Australia, skills assessments are conducted by one of three authorised accounting bodies — CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (CA ANZ), and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA). A positive outcome is essential for skilled visas such as 189, 190, 491, and employer-sponsored pathways.

Who Needs an Accounting Skills Assessment?

Accounting & Finance Roles

Accountant (General), Management Accountant, Taxation Accountant, External Auditor, and Internal Auditor — all require a skills assessment from CPA, CA ANZ, or IPA before applying for a skilled visa.

Business & Investment Roles

Finance Manager, Corporate Treasurer, Financial Investment Adviser, and Financial Analyst roles also fall under the accounting bodies' remit. Academic comparability is strictly assessed at this stage.

Accounting Bodies Overview

1

CPA Australia

Assesses qualification comparability and whether your degree covers all required core knowledge areas for accounting occupations.

2

CA ANZ

Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand assesses with a strong focus on core accounting curriculum and degree-level equivalency.

3

IPA

The Institute of Public Accountants assesses applicants for accounting and related business roles under criteria nearly identical to CPA and CA ANZ.

Key Assessment Criteria

Academic Qualification

Your degree must be equivalent to an Australian Bachelor (or higher), relevant to accounting, finance, business, or commerce, and awarded by a recognised and accredited institution.

Core Knowledge Areas

Your qualification must cover: Accounting Systems & Processes, Financial Accounting & Reporting, Management Accounting, Economics, Finance, Business Law, Accounting Theory, Auditing, Quantitative Methods, and Information Systems.

English Language (If Required)

Applicants from certain countries must provide valid English test results (IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, or OET), depending on the accounting body's specific requirements.

Employment Evidence (Optional)

While the focus is primarily academic, some applicants choose to include work reference letters, job descriptions, payslips, or employment contracts to strengthen their submission.

Accounting Skills Assessment Process

1

Choose the Right Body

Determine whether CPA Australia, CA ANZ, or IPA is the most suitable authority for your qualification and intended visa pathway.

2

Prepare Qualification Documents

Ensure transcripts, degree certificates, and subject lists are complete, clearly organised, and ready for assessment review.

3

Identify Knowledge Coverage

Map your degree subjects against the required core accounting knowledge areas and identify any potential gaps before applying.

4

Submit Online Application

Complete the online application through the chosen accounting body's portal and upload all required supporting documents.

5

Assessment & Verification

The accounting body verifies qualification equivalency, core subject coverage, English language ability, and any additional submitted documents.

6

Receive Outcome Letter

A positive assessment confirms your degree meets Australian accounting standards and that you satisfy competency criteria for your nominated occupation.

Documents Required

  • Passport and photograph
  • Name change documents (if applicable)
  • Degree certificate (Bachelor, Master, or both)
  • Academic transcripts
  • Subject descriptions or course syllabus (if requested)
  • English language test results (IELTS / PTE / TOEFL / OET, where required)
  • Employment reference letters, job descriptions, and payslips (optional)

Common Reasons Accounting Assessments Are Unsuccessful

Core Knowledge Areas Not Covered

Your degree must demonstrate coverage of all required accounting competency areas. Missing subjects can result in an unsuccessful outcome or request for further study evidence.

Qualification Not Equivalent

Qualifications below Bachelor degree level or from unrecognised institutions are unlikely to satisfy Australian accounting body requirements for migration purposes.

Incomplete or Missing Documents

Missing transcripts, incomplete subject documentation, or outdated course syllabi are among the most common causes of delays and unsuccessful outcomes.

Insufficient English Evidence

Applicants required to submit English test results who provide insufficient or expired evidence may receive a negative assessment outcome.

Wrong Assessing Authority

Applying to the incorrect accounting body for your specific occupation or qualification can complicate the process and lead to unnecessary delays.

Incorrect or Outdated Syllabus

Providing an incorrect version of your course syllabus, or one that does not match the year of study, can undermine the academic comparability review.

Frequently Asked Questions

All three bodies assess broadly the same accounting occupations with nearly identical criteria. The best choice depends on your qualification, the occupation you intend to nominate, and sometimes your visa pathway. Our consultants can advise which authority is most appropriate for your circumstances.

A gap in one or more required areas may result in a request for additional evidence, such as a detailed subject syllabus, or may require you to complete further study before a positive assessment can be issued. Identifying gaps before applying is strongly recommended.

Accounting bodies primarily assess your academic qualification rather than work experience. Employment documentation is optional and may be submitted to provide additional context, but the core assessment is based on your degree content and qualification level.
